What is 3DAM Additive Manufacturing?
3DAM (Metal Additive Manufacturing) is a production process where metal components are built layer by layer from ultra-fine titanium powder using digital 3D design data. Unlike traditional subtractive manufacturing methods such as turning or milling, additive manufacturing does not remove material from a solid block. Instead, it constructs the part from nothing, stacking microscopic layers of metal powder to form the final three-dimensional structure.
At S-PARTS, metal additive manufacturing is not treated as a novelty, but as a mature and practical production method. After years of technological development, this process has become deeply integrated into modern mechanical manufacturing and is now widely used beyond high-end industrial applications, including performance-focused civilian products.
One of the key advantages of additive manufacturing is its ability to realise complex geometries that are difficult or impossible to produce using traditional methods. This includes complex curved surfaces, ultra-thin structures, and highly efficient material layouts. By combining professional 3D design with mechanical simulation, material distribution can be precisely controlled to achieve optimal strength while eliminating unnecessary weight.
During development, S-PARTS found that many small, highly stressed components do not benefit from common industry approaches such as large-area hollowing or topology optimisation. Hollow designs often require increased wall thickness to maintain strength, reducing overall weight savings, while support structures can add unnecessary mass.
Instead, S-PARTS uses precise mechanical structural design and professional simulation software to optimise wall thickness at different stress points. This approach maximises strength and weight efficiency without relying on hollow cavities or excessive support structures.
All S-PARTS 3DAM products are produced using BLT SLM (Selective Laser Melting) metal printers and high-purity TC4 (Grade 5) titanium powder. The powder particle size is strictly controlled between 15 and 53 microns and complies with international standards such as GB and ASTM.
During printing, layer thickness is precisely controlled at 20 microns per layer. Although this significantly increases print time compared to conventional settings, it results in a noticeably finer surface finish and more consistent structural quality.
After printing, each component undergoes stress-relief annealing to eliminate internal stresses and stabilise the metal structure. This is followed by support removal, manual finishing, and surface colouring or coating. These steps ensure consistent mechanical performance, refined surface quality, and long-term reliability.
